Rediscovering the era of fashion from 1960-1979.

The Wonders of Fashion

THE ASK

Create a representation of the fashion trends and silhouettes that represent fashion from the 1960s - 1970s.

THE PROGRESS

STEP 1: RESEARCH

When researching fashion trends during the 1960s and 1970s, I noticed that women’s fashion was a top contender to find the most information on. I LOVE women’s fashion and aspire to create a womenswear clothing line and I thought it would be best to focus mainly on women’s fashion. My first step consisted of learning the history from 1960-1979. This included historical moments, trends, fads, fashion icons, entertainment, and even pop culture! As I dived deep into learning more and more about the eras of fashion, I wanted to focus directly on women’s everyday wear, evening wear, shoes, and accessories. I believe that pointing out those trends really defined the decade. From paper fashion to elephant pants, the 1960s and 1970s were the decades of freedom and self-expression. When each decade was researched I used a variety of sources such as WGSN, Vogue, The History of Modern Fashion by David James Cole & Nancy Deihl, Vintage Dancer, etc.

STEP 2: CREATIVE DRIVE

The creative drive for Wonders of Fashion was inspired by fashion events and social changes that have defined each decade from fabrics to textiles, each decade had a memorable theme represented throughout the slide deck. To elaborate, the 1960s focuses on the era of protest, discoveries, and advancements in fashion. The 1960s was also an era of change in generational issues. The youth and young adults became the voice of their generation and spoke up about political and societal issues. This created a change in not only society but in fashion as well. The race to space was another big event that changed and impacted fashion. The 1970s was a era of discovery, soul, and advocacy. With this in mind, I wanted to showcase how the youth created the era of generational change and “rebellion” throughout fashion.

STEP 3: VISUAL COMPONENTS

The visual components include images from 1960 - 1979. The images were retrieved from blogger Vintage Dancer, Macy’s catalogs, Sears catalogs, the documentary Battle at Versailles (2016), Vogue, Essence, Life, Battle at Versailles (2016) movie, and real-time photographs. I wanted to showcase raw and authentic photos from that time period to capture the life, trends, and culture of those decades.

Let’s take a look at the wonders of fashion from 1960 - 1979 in its entirety.

THE OUTCOME

Throughout the project, I learned a lot about the trends and silhouettes that defined those decades. With my focus on women's fashion, I noticed the change of liberation and self-guidance being one of the main factors in the influence of fashion. Another takeaway that I noticed was the influence of entertainment being a game-changer in fashion. I enjoyed learning about the different styles, fads, and trends that have impacted fashion in the 1960s and 1970s. Overall, this project allowed me to express my use of google slides, scaling, creativity, precision, organization skills, and unity.
